Love Field To Receive $519M Makeover
Thursday
Jan 22, 2009
To say that Dallas Love Field looks a bit dated would be an understatement. During it’s heyday in the early 1970’s, Love was the nation’s eighth-busiest airport with more than 70 gates and Boeing 747 jumbo jets rumbling down its runways.
But once Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport opened in 1974, Love became an aviation ghost town. It even briefly sported an ice rink inside an abandoned terminal.
Dallas-based Southwest Airlines Co. kept the airport alive and steadily grew, despite federal restrictions on how far its planes could fly from Love and the last of those restrictions will end in 2014 – the target date for Southwest and the city of Dallas to complete most of a $519 million capital improvement project set to break ground in June.
The work will replace the existing terminals with a new 20-gate concourse, expand baggage facilities and spruce up a facility that hasn’t had this much attention in decades.
The upgrades and future new routes are expected to nearly double Love Field’s passenger traffic from its current 4 million passengers a year to about 8 million annually, which would beat the 1973 peak of 6.6 million. That’s still far short of the roughly 27 million passengers that get on planes at D/FW Airport annually.
Under the plan, the existing terminals – and their combined 20 gates – will come down as a new T-shaped building rises. The first gates of the new concourse are expected to open in 2011. The biggest hang-up may be extensive work on the lower passenger drop-off road in front of the airport that will be completed in phases.
Still under consideration is a proposed underground people-mover from the Dallas Area Rapid Transit Green Line to the new terminal. A feasibility study continues, and a report about its costs won’t come until the fall.
Southwest is managing the improvement project for the city and has the ability to spend up to $75 million to get it started while Dallas waits for the right time to sell bonds to finance most of the improvements. The bonds will be paid for by higher landing fees and gate rentals paid by Southwest and other airlines, and also by ticket fees called passenger facility charges.
Passengers now pay $3 each time they go through Love; that’s likely to rise, but the process to increase the fee is long and complicated.
Revenue from additional parking and concessions also will help fund the work. Love Field’s current 23,000 square feet of food and retail concession space will increase to more than 57,000 under the expansion, Mitchell said. That means more restaurant variety and new shops.
The airline landscape at Love won’t change much with the project. The airport can’t add any gates, and Southwest will end up with 16 of them. Houston-based Continental Airlines Inc. will keep two gates, and Fort Worth-based American Airlines Inc. will have two. The three airlines together have about 160 departures daily from Love Field.
Still to be seen is how popular Love will be when the law that restricts flights from the airport, the Wright Amendment, expires in just over five years, allowing airlines to fly anywhere from Love.
Southwest has already seen the passenger benefits from the end of Wright’s “through-ticket” restrictions at Love Field. Instead of having to buy two separate tickets to fly, passengers now can buy one-stop travel anywhere in the country on just one ticket, boosting Love Field traffic by nearly 1 million passengers a year.
Southwest and city officials will discuss the future of Love Field at a meeting today hosted by the North Dallas Chamber of Commerce at the Frontiers of Flight museum near the airport.

Michael Irvin Suspects Noteriety Saved Him From Crime
Wednesday

A passing motorist pointed a handgun at former Dallas Cowboy Michael Irvin as he drove in Far North Dallas on Monday night, according to a police report.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame member was not injured. He told police he stopped at a red light in the 18200 block of Marsh Lane, near the Bush Turnpike, about 9:30 p.m., when the driver of the vehicle next to him rolled down his window, the police report said.
Irvin put down his window because he thought someone wanted to talk to him and saw the passenger in the other vehicle raise a gun, the report said. Irvin said in an interview Tuesday night that he feared the men had planned to rob him and changed their minds when they saw who he was.
“The passenger pulled out a semiautomatic and I knew what time it was,” Irvin said. “But he said ‘Oh, that’s Michael Irvin, with the Dallas Cowboys.’”
Despite being scared, Irvin said he tried to keep the conversation going.
“So we started talking about the Cowboys and everything,” he said. “Then they got back on the highway.”
“I tell you what, I’m glad he was a Cowboy fan,” Irvin said.
A detailed description of the men was not available.

Jewish Film Festival
Wednesday
Sep 5, 2007
Taking place on September 6 and 25, 2007, The Jewish Film Festival presents Eight Extraordinary Films From Around the World!
The popularity of film as a form of Jewish cultural identification has fed the growth and popularity of the Jewish Film Festival sponsored each year by the J.
Housed at the lovely Angelika Film Center at The Shops at Legacy in Plano, as well as the Zale Auditorium at the J, the Jewish Film Festival presents the most recent creations of Jewish filmmakers as well as classics.
Each film speaks in some way about what it means to be Jewish, either today or in the past, in the U. S. or in another country, inside the social mainstream or as an outsider. Each is a good story well told that stimulates our intellects, stirs our emotions and brings us insight!

Sushi Samba
Tuesday
Jul 17, 2007
Sushi Samba is a visually dynamic restaurant (located on the west side of the Galleria Mall next to the Westin Hotel) featuring cuisine blending a mix of Brazilian, Peruvian and Japanese. Dallas is new to the lineup with companion locations in Chicago, New York, Miami and Tel Aviv.
My dining companion and I visited Sushi Samba to sample the Sunday brunch menu and started with Batidas ($5.50) which is a combination of up to three fruit juices and on this trip we selected Asian Pear, Mango and Blueberry and the Mangolini ($6.50) which is a blend of sparkling wine, fresh mango and peach. Both drinks were an excellent beginning to the dining experience.
As a massive sushi enthusiast, I withheld from ordering from that section of the menu and instead focused on the Family Style Brunch which at $15 per person ($8 for under 12) is an astonishing value for the amount of food you receive.
We began our brunch with the Smoked Fish Platter ($13.00) which was a selection of smoked white fish, salmon and trout with homemade bagel chips along with capers, thin strips of red onion, tomatoes and creme fraiche. We initially began by placing selected items onto the large chips; however, the chips are so light and crisp that they weren’t practical to eat from in this way without crumbling at the first bite. We opted to use cutlery and just snack from the chips (we noticed another table experiencing the same thing). An excellent job was done on the smoked white fish and everything on the dish was fresh and tantalizing.
We then received the Eggs Benedict ($13.00) with aji panca hollandaise and smoked salmon served on a large slice of brioche bread - which was the perfect lightweight accompaniment. The aji panca hollandaise was a welcome change and the eggs were prepared perfectly.
The third dish was the Doce de Leite French Toast ($10) with seasonal fruit and powdered sugar. As someone who is not a big fan of French Toast, I was very surprised by the lightness of the bread and accompanying sauces and fruit garnishes of strawberries and blueberries.
The final dish was South American Frittata ($9.00) which was comprised of lingia, asparagus, heart of palm and manchego cheese. This was served in a small cast iron skillet and seemed a bit overcooked. The lingia added a nice amount of spice to the dish.
The Sunday brunch attracted a good crowd and our server was the best I’ve experienced in almost 10 months (I’m notorious for receiving terrible service). The pace in which the dishes were served was relaxed so we didn’t feel the need to rush before the new dish got cold though on one occasion the support staff took a dish before my companion had finished.
Dallas can be a fickle market when it comes to new dining options as we have such a wide variety to choose from and our standards can be more exacting than in many other cities. However, with a few minor adjustments, it appears that Sushi Samba will be able find their perfect niche.
We look forward to sampling the evening version of Sushi Samba in the near future and giving you the details.
