In just 48 hours the Snowball Express hits town and Dallas will welcome 1,400 kids and assorted guardians as they fly into DFW International Airport where 43 buses will pick them up and drive them to 10 downtown Dallas hotels.

The Patriot Guard Riders are leading the way in wrangling area bikers to help escort the buses — your help is still needed!

Registration is now open for these days / activities (you must REGISTER to be involved):

December 9: Escorting approximately 4 buses at a time from DFW International Airport to various downtown hotels. Register at: www.surveymonkey.com/s/MZJNF9B

December 10: KSU at all 10 hotels (approximately 9:30a) for Southfork Ranch. KSU (approx 3:45p) from Southfork to the Mesquite Rodeo (riders *may* be able to attend rodeo and have BBQ - awaiting confirmation). Register at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/M5FQC37

December 11:
KSU at all 10 hotels (approx 9:30a) for Dallas City Hall. Then escort kids on a “Walk of Gratitude” (foot parade) to Dallas Convention Center. Register at: www.surveymonkey.com/s/3MSRQX7

December 12: Approximate 10a KSU departure (details still being finalized). Once the Dallas Police Department finalize plans, all 43 buses will be escorted to Cowboys Stadium for a full day of activities including a concert by the Lt. Dan Band featuring Gary Sinese. The goal is to have 300-500 motorcycles ride into the stadium to ring the field (you MUST have a kick stand pad which will be checked to ensure it won’t damage Jerry’s field). It appears that we will be allowed to bring our own food/beverages. After the concert, the bikes will fire up and depart the field. Approximately 300 attendees will then be escorted to AAC for the Mavericks game and the rest will be returned to their hotels. Register at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/3N6LY9C

December 13: Escorting buses at various times (TBD) from the hotels back to DFW. Register at: TBD

Dallas Stars Reconsider Shutting Down Rink

Sunday

A North Texas rink is on thin ice and hundreds of parents are fighting plans to shut down the Dr Pepper StarCenter in Duncanville, with the prospect of it being replaced by Bob Knight’s Fieldhouse — a basketball center.

It’s stirring such passion that now the team says it may be having a change of plans.

This weekend, the action in Duncanville wasn’t on the ice but in a conference room, where hundreds of frustrated parents urged the Dallas Stars NHL team to keep the arena open.

The Dr Pepper StarCenter in Duncanville is one of eight North Texas rinks operated by the Stars, but it attracts half the customers of the others. Since it opened eight years ago, the organization says it is losing hundreds of thousands of dollars. With so many fighting for the rink, the team says it will now consider keeping it open as it serves so many of the southern suburbs.

Many already drive upwards of 30 miles for their children to skate here. They worry their kids’ dreams may, too, be put on ice if it closes.

The team says it will brainstorm with parents this week on how to keep the arena open. Still, directors insist the Duncanville center must become profitable to survive.

Dallas’ New Year’s Parade To Remain Downtown

Downtown Dallas will host a New Year’s Day parade in 2010, city officials say, even if the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic football game will next year move from its namesake stadium in Fair Park to Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.

Officially known as the Comerica Bank New Year’s Parade, the event is closely tied to the annual football game, featuring team bands, cheerleaders and thousands of football fans.

At a pep-rally style announcement Tuesday afternoon outside Comerica Bank’s downtown Dallas headquarters, Mayor Tom Leppert said “events like this send a clear message that downtown Dallas is indeed on a roll.”

Asked afterward if there was ever a question the parade would move to Arlington, Leppert said, “we just wanted to make sure it stayed here. Comerica is a great partner.”

The mayor added that there is no formal long-term deal to keep the parade in downtown Dallas, or Comerica as its primary sponsor. But Leppert said he expects the parade to remain in downtown Dallas for years to come.

The parade is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. on New Year’s Day, at the corner of Harwood Street and Ross Avenue. It will end at the corner of All Star Way and Houston Street just short of the American Airlines Center.
