As the layoffs of 550 teachers get under way later this week, Dallas Independent School District trustees plan to take a closer look at Superintendent Michael Hinojosa — finally!

The school board scheduled a meeting Thursday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. to evaluate Hinojosa’s job performance. The meeting will be closed to the public since it is an employment issue.

For more than a year, Hinojosa’s staff somehow overlooked a massive budget deficit that grew to an estimated $84-million, forcing the district to layoff almost 1,100 employees.

It’s uncertain what type of action, if anything at all, trustees will take in relation to Hinojosa in Thursday’s meeting.

Hispanic activist Carlos Quintanilla and his organization, Accion America, joined the NAACP and dozens of teachers in a call for Hinojosa’s to resignation.

Dr. Hinojosa has been a failure and he should resign,” he said in a statement Monday. “We are disappointed that Hispanic leaders would support someone who has shown a complete disregard for our children.

When questioned in recent weeks, Hinojosa has insisted that he will not resign, but rather work to fix the financial mess his staff created. Let’s keep in mind that Hinojosa claimed that 1 single person was responsible for that cluster mess and he refused to name the person other than saying “he” was no longer employed by DISD.

In September, Board President Jack Lowe told News 8 it would not be a good idea to fire Hinojosa because of the time it would take to search for a replacement while the district lingers in a financial emergency.
