The Trammell & Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art is now hosting the Texas Collects Asia 2008 exhibit which is a year-long display including other private Asian art collections from throughout Texas.

This is the first time that The Crow Collection has personally organized this broad exhibition, which honors the legacy of private collectors like the Crows, who love Asia and have shared that with Texans.

The year-long exhibition will be divided into five segments:

  • Japan: January 18- March 30
  • India and Southeast Asia: April 19- June 22
  • China: July 12- Sept. 28
  • Japanese Folk Art: Oct. 18- Dec. 28
  • Contemporary Art: Oct. 18- Jan. 4, 2009
  • Through paintings, figures, scrolls, swords, and printed screens, the exhibition will provide a glimpse into Asian culture and bear witness to the appeal that Asian art has to these Texas collectors. More than 30 families, individuals, and institutions are loaning their art to the Crow Collection to make this exhibition possible, along with the collaboration and partnership of the Dallas Museum of Art, the San Antonio Museum of Art, Sotheby’s, the World Affairs Council, the Greater Dallas Asian American Chamber of Commerce, the Asia Society and various other Asian associations in the Dallas area.

In tandem with each exhibition of Texas Collects Asia, The Crow Collection will also host an Asian Art in Texas lecture series, fortifying the bridge between East and West through educational public programs. Discover how these Texans, brought together for the first time, developed their own passion for the arts of Asia, and hear from the curators who selected the works for these landmark exhibitions.

With the 2008 Beijing Olympics just around the corner, the opportunity for Texas collectors to share their love for Asian art and culture could not be timelier. The exhibition will showcase Chinese art from mid-July through September to correlate with the Olympic games.

A catalogue for the full exhibit will be released on April 19, 2008, with the opening of Texas Collects Asia: India and Southeast Asia.

  • Free Noon Gallery Talks and Docent-Guided Tours are available weekly at select times.
  • Open Tues-Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., extended hours on Thursdays until 9 p.m.

What To Do On A Cold Friday Nite?

    Friday
    Jan 25, 2008

It’s cold and wet outside though the weekend should be fantastic — we might even get up to 70 on Sunday!

Tonite, it’s just cold. Plus it’s January, the Cowboys are out of the running, the television writers are on strike and it’s notorious for being a time when films that aren’t expected to do well at the box office are being released.

As Dallas is the third largest film-going audience in the US after NYC and LA, here are the wonders on celluoid that were released today for your viewing pleasure:

Rambo. Sly and his momma Jackie almost look alike these days. Momma isn’t in this film though which might have made it reach that NC-17 rating they were hoping for.

Persepolis. A girl exiles herself from Islamic fundamentalist Iran. Hits a wide range of emotions from funny to tragic.

Untraceable. Typical action adventure where Diane Lane is trying to find a loony toon that get’s their kicks off of killing people by the number of people tuning in to watch on the internet.

Grace is Gone. John Cusack in a very adult role as the husband and father coming to terms with the death of his wife.

How She Move. Plot is very obvious. Predictable ending.
